How to build a home recording studio in Nigeria.

Start with the room, not the gear

The biggest mistake new artists in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Yenagoa and Abuja make is spending everything on a mic and recording in a tiled, echo-heavy room. Pick the smallest carpeted bedroom you have, hang thick blankets on two adjacent walls, and record facing a wardrobe full of clothes. That single change improves your sound more than any ₦200,000 microphone upgrade.

Budget gear list (under ₦500,000)

• Audio interface — Focusrite Scarlett Solo or M-Audio M-Track Solo. Available at Computer Village (Lagos) and most online Nigerian gear shops.
• Microphone — Audio-Technica AT2020 or Rode NT1-A. Skip USB mics; a real XLR condenser future-proofs your setup.
• Headphones — Audio-Technica ATH-M40x or AKG K240. Closed-back for tracking, so the beat doesn't bleed into the vocal.
• Pop filter & boom stand — ₦15,000–25,000 total. Non-negotiable.
• DAW — FL Studio, Reaper or the free Cakewalk. All three run on modest laptops.

Room treatment on a budget

You don't need ₦1m of acoustic foam. Heavy curtains, a thick rug, a duvet draped behind the mic and a bookshelf opposite it will tame most of the early reflections that make home recordings sound amateurish. The goal is dead, not pretty.
